Cycling: It's all a balancing act!

Cycling: It's all a balancing act!

Why does stability matter in cycling performance? Should we all spend a bit more time on one leg in 2019? Learn how you can test your balance and stability yourself at home and begin some simple work to improve your riding.

As more of us are beginning to train with ever more sophisticated power metres giving us more information than ever to understand our performance it is important to understand what exactly goes into generating the forces we are measuring and analysing. Why do you feel like one leg is ‘smoother’ or ‘works better’ than the other one? Why does your power metre always show a 47%:53% split in power production left vs right? Why can’t your knees stay in a straight line when you push down on the pedal?

As the short days and cold weather continues and the festivities are over, many of us are now starting to look forward to the season ahead. It might also be a time where our training changes. For the cyclists and triathletes amongst us, we might spend more time indoors on the turbo, continue to brave the conditions on the winter bike or reduce the ‘on the road/pool’ training allowing more time to explore other activities and try new things.

Winter is coming...

Winter is coming...

As the nights draw in and the temperature falls many of us are reflecting on the past season and starting to think ahead to next year. It might also be a time where our training changes. For the cyclists amongst us, we might spend more time on the turbo, put the summer bike away in favour of the winter bike or get the mudguards on. For some the volume of training drops a little, for others the ‘off season’ is a time where training becomes more focussed or an opportunity to try new things.
